Varipower Module
For use with Vivitar Model 283 Auto/Thyristor
Electronic Flash Unit only
Introduction
The Vivitar VP-1- Varipower Module is your control to "dial in" a
specific amount of flash illumination. You can balance "main" and
"fill" lights without making drastic changes in f lash-to-sublect
distances. You can conserve battery energy by using the minimum
amount of light required for correct exposures. You can shorten
recycling time whenever "fast shooting" is more important than high
levels of light output.

Since the VP-1 provides continuously variable control, you may
visually estimate changes in light output when the Varipower Dial is
set with the Varipower Index Mark midway between marked positions.
NOTE: The minimum Varipower Dial setting is marked wilh a dot (')
at which point the VP-1 will limit light output to approximately
1 /64 of full manual power. A few test exposures will quickly
establish the light output of your 283 using this minimum dial setting.
Scale the Exposure CorrectionUsing indicates- the difference between Exposure CorrectionThe Scale @
exposure at full manual power and exposure al a selected dial
setting. This difference is indicated in a number of full f-stops. The
minus symbol preceding each exposure correction serves as a
reminder that the exposure is less than that obtained with full power
and that the camera lens must be opened by the indicated
number of f-stops.

For example, if you're using DIN 15 (ASA 25) film and your flash-to-
subject distance is21/q meters (7Vz'feei), the 283's Calculator
Dial indicates correct exposure at fB. lf you now set the Varipower
Dial at "2" or Vz power, your photograph will be underexposed
1-stop unless you open your lens diaphragm to the next larger f -stop.
ln this example, the exposure correction indicates "-1" which
would result in correct exposure at f5.6.
Since the VP-1 provides continuously variable control, you may
visually estimate exposure corrections in 1/s or 7z f-stop increments
when the Varipower Dial is set with the Varipower Index Mark
between marked positions.
NOTE: The minimum Varipower Dial setting is marked with a dot (')
at which point the VP-1 will limit light output to approximately 6
f-stops below exposure at full manual power. A few test exposures
will quickly establish the exact exposure correction for your
283 using this minimum dial setting.

your daylight exposure calculations call for fB at 1/60 second. (Remember lo check your camera's shutter speed requirements for "X" synchronization.) lf your f lash-to-subject distan ce is 21h meters (7th f eet), proper f lash exposure would also be fB. Taking tne picture with these daylight and flash conditions would produce a strong fill (the flash "fill" illumination equals the daylight iilumination used as a "main" light). For a normal fill, you would ordinarily increase flash-to-subject distance to 3.3 meters (11 feet). For a weak fill, you would increase flash-to-subject distance to 4.6 meters (15 feet). However, you may not have room to make these increases in flash-to-subject distance. Also, if your flash is mounted on your camera, you'll alter the composition of your picture if you begin moving camera and flash to increase flash-to-subject distances. With the Vivitar VP-1 Varipower Module, simply dial to ,,- 1 ', for normal fill, or dial to for a weak fill. There's no need to change the flash-to-subject distance. For example, using DIN 15 (ASA 25) f ilm, you're about to make several exposures with a flash-to-subject distance of 21/z meters (71h teel). Using full manual power, your Calculator Dial indicates proper exposure at fB. Dialing the VP-1 to "8" and opening your lens to f2.B will also produce proper exposures, decrease battery drain, and reduce recycling time. Also, you'll find it easier to "freeze" aclion when operating at reduced power since you're shortening flash duration as you dial away f rom "FULL."View original page 10

Blitzbelichtung Blende B. Eine Aufnahme unter diesen Tageslichts-
und Blitzbedingungen wdre stark "ausgeleuchtet" (die
"Ausleuchtung" mit Blitz ist derTageslichtbeleuchtung, die als
"Haupt-"Licht Verwendung findet, gleich).

Introduction
intensit6s d'eclairage.
