HandlingCautions
CameraCare and Storage
(1) The camerais a precisioninstrument.Do not drop it or subjectit to
physicalshock.
(2) This camerais not waterproofand cannotbe usedundenruater.lf the
cameragets reallywet, promptlyconsultyour nearestCanonService
Center.Wipeoff any waterdropletswitha dry cloth.lf the camerahas d
beenexposedto saltyair,wipewith a well-wrungdampcloth.
(3) Do not leavethe camerain placesproneto excessiveheatsuchas in
a car on a sunnyday. Excessiveheatcan causethe camerato
malfunction.
(4) The cameracontainsprecisionelectroniccircuitry.Neverattemptto
disassemblethe camera.
(5) Use onlya blowerbrushto blowawaydust on the lens,eyepiece,
mirror,focusingscreen,andfilmcompartment.Do not cleanthe
camerabodyor lenswitha cleanercontainingan organicsolvent.For
stubborndirt,consultyournearestCanonServiceCenter.
(6) The shuttercurtainsare extremelythin.Useonlya blowerto clean
them.Be carefulnot to blowair too forcefullyon the shuttercurtains.
The shuttercuftainscan be easilydeformedor damaged.Also,when
' loadingand unloadingfilm,be carefulnotto touchthe shuttercurtains.
(7) Do not touchthe electricalcontactswith yourfingers.Otherwise
corrosionmaydevelopon the contacts,resultingin impropercamera
operation.
(8) lf the camerais not to be usedfor an extendedperiod,removethe
battery.Storethe camerain a well-ventilated,cool,dry place.During
the storageperiod,pressthe shutterbuttonto releasethe shuttera
few timesoncein a while.
(9) Avoidstoringthe camerain a laboratory,cabinet,etc.,wherecorrosive
chemicalsare present.
(10)lf the camerahas not beenusedfor an extendedperiodor if the
camerais to be usedfor an imporlantevent,checkthe operationof all
the cameracontrolsor take it to your nearestCanonServiceCenter
for inspection.
(11) Afterdetachingthe lensf romthe camera,put on the lenscapsor put
downthe lenswith the rearend up to avoidscratchingthe lenssurface
and electricalcontacts.
(12)Evenwhenthe MainSwitchis set to < GF >, a smallamountof power
is stillsuppliedto the camera'sLCDpanel.However,thisdoesnot
affectthe numberof film rollswhichcan be takenwiththe battery.

LCD Displays
In time,the camera'sLCDpaneldisplayand the LCDdisplayin the
viewfindermayfadeand becomedifficultto read.lf this happens,haveit
replaced(at cost)by a CanonServiceCenter.
At low temperatures,the LCD displayresponsemay becomeslower.And
at 60'C or highertemperatures,the displaymay blacken.In eithercase,
the displaywill returnto normalat roomtemperature.
Lithium Batteries
(1) The cameraoperateson two CR123Alithiumbatteries.Checkthe
batterylevelin the followingcases(-+page18):
. Afterreplacingthe batteries.
. Afternot usingthe camerafor an extendedperiod.
. The shutterstopsworking.
. The camerais beingusedin a low-temperatureenvironment.
. You willbe shootingan importantevent.
(2) Beforeinstallingthe batteries,wipethe batterycontactsto removeany
fingerprintsand smudges.Thisis to preventfaultyconnectionsand
corrosion.
(3) Neverdisassembleor rechargethe batteries.Also,neverstorea
batteryin high-temperatureplacesor shortcircuitthe batterycontacts
or toss a batteryintoa fire.
(4) Althoughthe batteriesworkwell evenat low temperatures,battery
performancemaydeclineslightlyat freezingtemperatures.In sucha
case,keepsparebatterieswarm in a pocket,etc.,and use and warm
the batteriesalternately.
How Low Battery Levels Affect Camera Operation
On the LCDpanel,if the < 0 > iconblinksor it is not displayed,a proper
exposurecan stillbe obtainedas longas the shutterreleases.However,
whenthe batterylevelis low,film advanceand auto rewindmightstop
midwayor notworkat all and < fl > may blinkon the LCDpanel.Afterthe
batteriesare replacedwithnewones,filmadvancewillbe possibleand film
rewindcan resumeby pressingthe < 03! > button.

Check the batterylevel after replacingthe batteriesand before using the
camera.
Turn the Command Dial to a
picture-taking mode.

Mountingand Detachinga Lens
Mounting a Lens
Remove the caps.
. Remove the rear lens cap and the
camera body cap.
Mount the lens.
. Align the red dots on the lens and
camera and turn the lens as shown
by the arrow until it snaps in place.

switch to <AF>.
. lf the focus mode switch is set to
<MF> (or <M> on older lenses),

By adjustingthe diopter,eyeglasswearers will not need their eyeglassesto
see a sharp viewfinderimage. The camera's adjustabledioptricrange is
-2.5 to +0.5 dpt.
Remove the eyecup.

The EOS camera's shutter button can be depressed halfway or all the way.
There is a click stop at the halfwaypoint.
Pressing the Shutter Button Halfway or Completely
The shutterbuttonworks as describedbelow.
When it is pressed halfway:
. Autofocusingis activated,and when
focus is achieved,the focusingpoint
flashes and the beeper sounds.The
in-focusindicator<O> on the
viewfinder'slower right also lights.
. Also, the shutterspeed and aperture
are set and displayedon the LCD
panel and in the viewfinder.
When it is pressed completely:
. The shutter is releasedto take the f
pictureand the film advancesby one
frame.

Lll . Camera movement during the moment of exposure is called camera shake.
Camera shake can cause blurred pictures.To prevent blurred picturesdue to
camera shake:
' Hold the camera steady (see page 26).
. Use the center of your finger to touch the shutter button, grasp the camera
with your entire right hand, then press the shutter button gently.
. lf the AF Mode Dial has been set to . tl*uo >, the in-focusindicator< O > will

Holdingthe Camera
To avoidtaking blurredpictures,hold the camera steadyto minimize
camerashake.
Horizontalshooting Verticalshooting
. Firmlygrasp the cameragrip with your right hand, and press your right
elbow lightlyagainstyour body.
. Hold the lens at the bottom with your left hand.
. Press the camera againstyour face and look throughthe viewfinder.
. To maintaina stable stance,place one foot in front of the other insteadof
liningup both feet.

position.When you switch between the horizontaland verticalorientations,the
detectionmechanism inside the camera will make a small sound.

For quick and easy picture-taking,this

set all the camera settingsautomatically.
All you do is pointthe camera and press
the shutterbutton.
Also, these modes overridethe

dials, film advance mode lever (except

a @<<>, and the shutterbutton).This is
to preventspoiledshots caused by
accidentaloperationof camera controls.
FullyAutomaticShooting

subject.
