Themultiple-exposureleverlocatedadjacentto thec filmadvanceleverpermitsanynumberof exposures0n
oneframe.Aftermakingthe first exposure,pushthe
multipleexposurelever90 degreescounterclockwis
while cockingthe shutter.Boththe film and frame
counterwill notadvance.Themultipleexposurelever
will automaticallyclickbackto its originalpositionso
thatwhenthe secondexposureis made,thefilm will
advanceas normal.lf a third,or additionalexposures
areto be made0n the sameframe,set the multiple
exposurelevereachtime.
To make multiple exposures, make the first
exposure normally, then before advancing to
the next frame, push the multiple exposune
lever counter-clockwise. Turn the advance
lever and the shutter will be cocked but the
film will not advance.

CHANGINGLENSES
Toremovea lensfromthecamera,pressthe lens-
releasebuttonlocatedto the rightof the lens,while
twistingthelensclockwiseuntilit canmovenofurther.
Thelenswill nowpulloff freelY.
To mountan Al lens,positionthe lens so the
focusing-indexmarkalignswiththemounting-indexon
thecamera.Mountthelenson thecamerabodysothat
thelensis firmlyseatedonthelens-mountflange.Turn
the lenscounterclockwiseuntilit clicksintoposition'
To mounta non-Allens,makesurethe camera's
meter-couplingleveris outof thewayof thelens.Push
themeter-couplingleverreleasebutton,andfoldit back
towardthecamerabody.Mountingprocedurefromthis
pointis identicalto Al lenses.
SELF-TIMER
Theself-timerdelaysthereleaseof theshutterfor
tensecondsafterit hasbeentriggered.Theself-timer
- -leveris locatedat thebaseof theshutterspeeddial'To -operatethis mechanism,set the exposurecontrols,
advancethefilm andpushtheself-timerlevert0 the
rightuntilthe reddotis uncovered.Activatethe timer
by pressingtheshutter-releasebutton.TheredLEDon
the frontof the camerawill flashsteadilyfor eight
secondsand thenblinkrapidlyduringthe last two
secondsas a warningto get readY.
Theself-timerdoesnotreturnt0 a normalshutter
releaseautomatically.The switchmustbe manually

Tomakea delayedexposure,push the self
timer lever to the right.A red LEDf lases
steadilyfor the f irst eight seconds;and then
speedsup for the last two secondsof the
delay.
To cancelthe timer after pressingthe shutter
releasebutton,pushthe self-timerleverbackto its
originalposition.Thepicturewill notbe taken.
Theself-timerworksjust as well with the MD-4
motordriveexceptthe LEDis coveredandrendered
useless.

An addedadvantageis whenthe motordriveis set
on the continuous,("C" setting)anda smallobjectis
usedto holdthe MD-4shutterreleasebuttondown,
enablesthe motordriveto be usedas a ten second
intervaltimer.
MIRRORLOCKUPLEVER
When using super-telephotolenses 0r doing
photomicrographyit becomesnecessaryt0 reduce
cameravibrationt0 an absoluteminimum.Mirror
vibrationmay causea disturbancein these twospecializedsituations.TwoNikkorlensesthat require L
the reflexmirrorto be lockedup are the Fish-eye-
Nikkor6 mm//5.6andthe0P Fish-eyeNikkor10 mm
f/5.6.Also,whenusingthe MD-4motordriveat top
speed,-6framespersecond-itbecomesnecessary
to lockup the mirror.
Themirrorlock-upleveris locateddirectlybehind
thedepth-of-fieldpreviewbutton.Tl lockthemirrorin
the "up" position,pushin the depth-of-fieldpreview
button.and rotatethe mirror lock-uplever coun-
terclockwiseuntilit stoPs.
N|TE'Donotusetheautomatic-exposuresettingonthe
shutterspeeddialwhenthe mirroris lockedup.This
alsoapplieswhenyou lockup the mirrorwhenusing
the MD-4motordriveat highspeeds.

thatshouldhelpmaintainthe longlife expectancyof
the NikonF3,
Keep the camera clean. Uselenscleaning
tissuesmoistenedwith alcoholor lenscleanerfor the
lenssurfaces.Usea blowerbrushto removedustfrom
all camerapartsinsideanct'out.
TheF3 is especiallyeasyto cleanas it is easily
"fieldstrippedl'Two placesin the camerathatneed
extracarewhencleaningare the shuttercurtainand

mirrormechanism.Both are extremelyfragileand
shouldonlybe cleanedwith a blowerbrush.Never
touchthesemechanismswithyourfingers.
Store the camera properly. Alwayskeep
frontandbacklenscaps0na lensnotbeingused.Keep
a bodycap 0n the camnrabodywhena lensis not
mountedon it.
Whenstoringa cameraandits electronicaccesso-
riesalwaysremovethe batteries.
Never subject the camera to excessive
heat. Heatcanruinfilmsandshorrenthelifeof the
meteringsystem'sLCD.
Keep the camera dry. Whenshootingin the
rainor snow,0r neartheocean,wrapthecamerain a
plasticbag.Usea rubberbandto holdtheopenendof
the bagaroundthe lensshadeor filter ring.Always
protectthe lenswith a skylightor U.V.filterto keep
wateroff the lensitself.
Never attempt to do your own repairs.
Repairsinsidethecamera,lens,motordriveor flash
unitshouldbe left to an authorizedNikonrepairman.

TheMd-4MotorDriveis a light-weight,extremelyfast,full-scalemotordrivefor the NikonF3.lt providesan adjustablerangeof firing speedsupto 6 framespersecond.lt alsocanbe used withremote-controlaccessoriesviatheremoteterminal on the frontof the unit.The MD-4MotorDrivealso featuresmotorizedfilm rewindanda subtractiveframe counter. To mount the MD-4 motor drive, you must first remove the rewind cap on the camera's baseplate. TheM0-4MotorDrivemaybe attachedor detached
fromtheF3 bodyat anytime,evenif film is loadedin
thecamera.Thedangerof foggingyourfilm is greatly
reducedby a spring-loadedlighttrap insidethe film
chamberthat keepslight from enteringthe camera
throughthe powerfilm rewindmechanism.Evenwith
thelighttraphowever,it is stilladvisableto removethe
motorin subduedlightif the camerais loaded.

The S8- | 2 exposure calculator dial is used to determine the aperture when the flash is used in the manual mode. the SB-12's mountby rotatingthe lockingring clockwiseuntil it stops.The unit is now lockedin positionandfullyintegratedwiththe camera.
