We odvise you to proctise operoting the vorious controls ond levers before looding the comera. Turn out
ihe inner leoves of the cover for furlher reference, ond generolly get fomilior with your comero.
Setting the distancg. The correct distonce should be set by operoting ihe rongefinder within the finder
imoge. In the centre of the finder imoge is o circulor oreo which is divided into two holves (definition
indicotor). When o perpendiculor line is sighted in the viewfinder ond the focusing ring (7) is operoted,
the two imoges in the rongefinder will move in opposile direciions ond the verticol line will oppeor brpken.
The distsnce is correctly set when the lwo poriiol imoges ore exocily oligned ond form one singfi un-
distoried imoge. When toking upright pictures o horizonfcl, line gfould be chosen.
The split-imog-erongefinder is surrounded by o micro-roster ring, which is similor to o ground-gloss
screen ring. The outlines of o subiect will oppeor unshorp in this ring, when out of focus. The micro-
roster ring should be used for focusing, therefore, in the some woy os o ground-gloss screen is used.
This meihod of focusing should be used when the subiect hos no distinct verticol lines, especiolly when
complex structures or potterns ore lo be photogrophed or the CONTAREX is used for copying. The
CONTAREX lenses from 35 mm to 250 mm focol length con be focused with either the split-imqge ronge-
finder or the micro-roster ring (Fig. l).
The oreo of the finder imoge outside the centrol ring is olwoys bright ond shorp ond connot be used
for focusing.

After focusing, the octuol distonce ond the depth of
field con be reod off from the lens mount. On the
setting mork (.|6)the focused distonce is indicoted. To
lhe left ond to the right of the setting mork the
flnumbers of the opertures ore engroved. The shorp
zone, thot is to Soy, the depth of field, reoches from
the distonce-figurewhich is opposite the set operture-
volue on the left, to the distonce which is opposite
the some flnvmber on the right. Exoct porticplors of
the depth of field con be found in the depth-of-field
lobles. As the plone of reference for the distqnces,
the foccrl plone is morked by the circle (28) on top of
ihe viewf inder eyepiece of the CONTAREX.

The distonce con olso be set by using the depth of
field scole. Turn the lens so os to ensure the depth of
field required of ony given operture setting ond then
set this operture by meons of the operture setting

When looding lhe comerq the speed of the film musl be set ogoinst rhe mork (t2). prior to ioking o
piciure, most phofogrophers will pre-selectthe shutter speed which tokes into qccount the speed of the
moving subjeci. For ihis purpose the shutter speed ring (23) should be turned so ihot the mork (22) is
opposite the shuiter speed required. This seis the shutter speed desired (Fig. 3). The figures on the
shutter speed ring ore simplified ond denote froctions of o second (e. s. 60 = 1/to sec.). Witfr the hond-
held comero ond the stondord lens, pictures con be mode without comero shoke ot shutter speeds from
r/:o sec. lo 1ltooosec. Slower shuiter speeds ond time exposures should be employed only when the comero
is screwed to o tripod. With lenses of longer focol lengths the shuiter speeds should be considerobly
foster. Only full volues con be chosen.
       .u ^*"s
When sighting ihrough fhe viewfinder, you will see o bright strip to the right of the finder imoge, which
is provided with o centrol mork. The pointer of the exposure meter is reflecied into this strip. When the
operture setiing ring (4) is turned the pointer con be ceniered on the mork (Fig.4). When the pointer is deod
on ihe mork the correct operture for the shutter speed determined beforchond is pre-set. This setting
con be ony intermediote operture volue. The pre-set operture con be reod off from the operture scole (5).
When ihe shutter is releosed the diophrogm inside the lens springs outomoticqlly to the pre-set operture.

lf the pointer connot be centered on the mork by turning lhe operture setting ring (4), the shuler speed
chosen is either too slow or too fost for the prevoiling lighiing conditions ond the speed of the film in
use. A slower or foster shutter speed should ihen be selected.

                                                                         r3

The indicotion of lhe exposure meter (18) con olso be reod off from ihe top cop of ihe CONTAREX.
Here the pointer should be centered on the centre of the circle.
lf on exposure is to be mode with o pre-defermined operture, e. g. to obtoin o definite depth of field,
the operture in question should be set by meons of ihe operture seiting ring (4) so thot the operture
figure in the operture scole is opposite the mork. Now sight through the viewfinder ond lurn the shutter
speed setting ring (23) so thot the pointer in the viewfinder is centered on the mork. This sets the correci
shutter speed in relotion lo ihe pre-selected operture. In this cose, however, only one shuiter speed
should be indicoted which should correspond to the mork (22) ond snop in distinctly. When on,.inter-
mediotq-volue is indicoted, turn fhe ring (23) until it snops in ond then turn the operture setiing ring (4)
until the pointer is exoctly opposile the mork.
The exposure coupling involves o limit in the shutter speeds which con be set ouiomoticolly for the
vorious film- speeds. For instonce, wiih 12 ASA film, the slowest speed is 'l second, with 50 ASA
film it is 1/a sec., with 400 ASA film'/so s€c. etc. Rigid stops ensure ihot these limits determined by the
meosuring ronge of the exposure meter connot be exceeded, since ihis would result in incorrect exposures.
When it is required to use ony combinotion of shutter speed ond operture independent of fhe coupling
(e. g. for copying), the mork for the film speed (12) is set to the green dot ot the beginning- of the film-
speed scole. Then oll setiings from "B" lo 1ltooosec. cqn be used without restriciion (Fig. 5).

pull it out towords the front. Now o yellow dot will be visible. The film speed should now be set to
ihe yellow dot ond no longer to the block iriongle (Fig. 6).
With ihe light boffle removed the exposure meter hos been converted io "incident light meosuring,,.This
olso chonges the procedure of meosuremenl: now the incident light folling on the subiect must be meosur-

with the red dol (10)on the CONTAREX.Turn the lens to the right until it snops in. This will couse the knob
  (9) to iump out. The lens will be coupled outomoticolly to the exposure meter os well os to the
rongefinder. lt does not motter whether the lens ifself is set to "infinify" or ony intermediote distonce,
or to which operture the diophrogm is set. When the lens is inserted the meosurement of the exposure
meter is limited qutomoticolly to the speed of the lens in use.
The CONTAREX lenses con be interchonged in full doylight withoui fogging the film but ii is obvious
thot the opening in the comero should be protected from direct sunlight.

After looding, the frome counter (3) should be set. When your cor-
tridge contoins film for 36 exposures set the white mork to the red
Q A mork to the left of 36; when you use o 2O-exposurecortridge the
l'l' white mork should be set to the red mork to the left of 20. Now the
ropid wind lever (l ) is swung oround with your right thumb until it
butts hord ogoinst the stop, ond then releqse the shutter. Do this
twice so qs to wind the fogged leoder film on to the toke-up spool.
After releosing the shutter twice, unfogged film will be behind the
film gote ond the frome counter mork will point towords 36 or 20,-The
frome counter counts bockwords, thot is to Soy, it indicotes the

lf the film is wound on properly, the rewind disc (20) should rotote
in the opposite direction to the engroved orrow. When using bulk
