Preparingthe LEICAC3 for use Ghecking the battery
When the camera is switchedon (see p.36) and the batteryhas suffi-
cient capacity,the battery symbol ({z ) appearscompletelyfilled in
on the LCD data panel (8). The lens (14) also moves to its ready
position.lf the symbolappearsonly half filled(c- ), this meansthat
the battery capacity is down to 30% at the most and the battery
needs to be changedsoon. s.2 -b/0 lf the half-filledsymbol ({z ) is flashingor no displayappearsat all, tro the battery is flat and must be replacedimmediately.In this case,the
camera will no longerfunction.Therefore,we recommendyou take a
spare battery with you when travelling.
A new batterywill last for around 13 36-exposurefilms with 50% use
of the flash, i.e. around 450 exposures(accordingto Leica testing
Insertingand removingthe battery standards).
Ihe LEICAC3 takes a 3 volt lithium battery (e.9. DuracellDL 123 A,
KodakKL 123 LA, PanasonicCR 123A, VartaCR123A or other CR123 Notes:

Warning:
Cold conditionsimpairthe batteryperformance.The film also be-
comesstiffer,makingit harderto wind.Therefore,at lowtemperatures
the LEICAC3 shouldbe keptas closeto the bodyas possibleand a
new batteryshouldbe fitted.
Thebatterycontactsshouldalwaysbe keptclean.
Batteriesshouldneverbe put in a fire, heated,recharged,takento
piecesor brokenapart.
Usedbatteriesmay not be disposedof as normal,householdwaste
as theycontainhazardousmaterialsthat harmfulto the environment.
To ensurethat theyare properlyrecycled,they shouldbe returnedto
the dealeror disposedof as specialwaste(at a collectionpoint).

Setting the data
1. With the camera switchedon, press the DATEbutton (10) until the I

sing and releasingthe button increasesthe value by 1; holdingthe

4. Pressingthe M00E button for a fifth time stores the values.TheTheLEICAC3 has an integrateddating facility.This allows either the
displaystops flashingas confirmation.time (hour and minute)or the date (day,month and year in three dif-
ferentselectableorders),as desired,to be imprinted in the bottom

Notes:
The data is imprinted onto the film, from the front, by LCD (Liquid
CrystalDisplay)elements.The brightnessof the imprint is controlled
by the camera's automatic film speed setting (DX coding).Even so,
therecan be slightvariationsin legibilitydependingon the film used.
With certainlow speed films, the imprint is only very faint or cannot
be seen at all.
The data appearsin red to orange on dark subject areas and orange
to yellow on light areas.Therefore,it can only be seen with difficulty
againstlight,orangecolored or very "busy" backgrounds.
The automaticcalendarruns until the year 2050.

Setting the desireddate order
To reflectthe differinginternationalconventionsfor dates,the LEICA
C3 allowsyou to choosefrom threedifferentformats.
1.Withthe cameraswitchedoff, pressthe DATEbutton(10)untilthe
numericaldisplayflashes.
2. Eachsubsequentpressof the the TIMEHbutton(9) changesthe
dateformatas follows: 15
