ENGLISH (pp.2-18)
Your specially designed Auto Electroflash CLE virtually eliminates common setting mistakes
electronically for easy, foolproof, and versatile operation with Minolta's compact new CLE camera.
Simply sliding the unit's mounting bracket into the camera's hot shoe connects it cordlessly.
At automatic speeds below 1/60 sec., a signal to the camera electronically starts the "60" LED in
the finder blinking as a flash-ready indication and sets the camera for X-sync. at 1/60 sec. when the
shutter is released. Off-the-film exposure mgasurement by the camera's Direct Metering System
enables taking autoflash pictures at any aperture. Flash duration can be adjusted over a four-stop
range using the camera's exposure-adjustment control for optimum results under unusual conditions.
A built-in diffuser provides full coverage for the camera's 28mm M-Rokkor lens. A special circuit
reduces power to the capacitor immediately after charging to minimize battery drain. Besides a
power switch, the Auto Electroflash CLE has a contact on its mounting bracket that automatically
turns the flash off whenever the unit is removed from the camera.
Before using your flash unit for the first time, please read this manual allthe way througtf so that
you will be able to operate it correctly and realize the full potential of your Minolta Auto Electro-
flash CLE right from the start.
Throughout the text you wilt find a series of numbers. Each of these refers to a picture on the

PREPARATION AND BASICS

BATTE RI ES
The Auto Electroflash CLE is designed to be powered by two AAA-size batteries. These may be
of the sealed carbon-zinc, alkaline-manganese ("AM" or "alkaline"), or rechargeable nickel-cadmium
("Ni-Cd" or "nicad") type cells.

NOTES
o Flash performance will depend on type of battery used. For example, nickel-cadmium cells
perform better at low temperatures than either carbon-zinc or alkaline-manganese batteries.
Therefore nickel-cadmium cells are recommended for use in cold weather.
o Mixing of battery types, or using an exhausted battery with a fresh one could cause battery
  leakage or bursting.
o Ni-Cd batteries should only be charged in their designated chargers.

Installing batteries
   To properly install batteries, proceed as follows;
1. With power switch (A.3) in the "OFF" position, remove the battery-chamber cover (A'91 by press-
ing down on it and sliding it in the direction of the arrow (B-1).
2. After wiping the terminals with a clean, dry cloth, insert the batteries with their plus (+) and
minus (-) ends positioned as indicated by the diagram inside the chamber (C).

 NOTE
lf batteries are reversed, the flash will not operate and possible battery leakage or bursting may
 resu lt.
 3. Close the chamber by carefully realigning and sliding the cover towards the attaching bracket
(A-4) until it snaps securely into place (€-2lr.
ATTACHING AND REMOVING FLASH
To attach the flash to the Minolta CLE or other cameras with hot shoes, simply turn the power
switch off and slide the flashes'attaching bracket straight and as far as it will go into the camera's
hot shoe (D-1). The flash tube and reflector (A-l) should be directed straight ahead.
Make sure the attaching bracket is all the way into the hot shoe, so that atl camera anfl flash
contacts mate properly.
To remove the flash, hold it by its lower part and slide the unit straight back and out of the
camera's hot shoe (D-2).
NOTE
Do not twist or tilt the unit when attaching or removing it, as this could damage the flash or
camera.

SETTING FILM SPEED

a In order to establish the automatic operating range or manual flash-to-subject distance for
particular film and lens aperture, the ASA rating of the film being used must be set on the flash.
To do this, slide the film-speed selector(A-5) to either the right or left until the ASA number of the
film being used is aligned opposite the white triangular film-speed index (E) . Graduated marks
between numbers on the scale represent ASA film speeds as shown in the following table. The table
also gives DIN film-speed equivalents.

                                                   125 160 320

Once the ASA has been set, automatic operating ranges and manual flash-to-subject distances
can be determined by using the distance and aperture scales with the green flash-distance indicator
bars (A-13) on the back of the flash. Use of the scales and indicators is explained in the automatic
and manual operation sections of this manual (pages 9-13).

 WIDEANGLE-DI FFUSER PANEL
The Auto Electroflash CLE provides sufficient ffash coverage for lenses of 40mm or greater focal
length' To extend coverage down to lenses of 28mm, a built-in diffuser (A-2) can be positioned over
the flash-tube's guard window. The panel is positioned by sliding it across the front of the guard
window with your finger, using the paner rug, untir it cricks into piace (F-l). To return the paner to
its normal position, slide it past the click-stop position and a built-in spring will move it back to the normal position lF-2l-.
When the flash is turned on, one of two LED indicators (4_61 will light on the back of the flash to indicate the panel's position. lf the panel is not fully extended to the click-stop wide position, the wide LED indicator will not light.
The diffuser panel reduces the light output of the flash, so operating ranges in automatic, and
flash-to-subjectdistance in manual operation will also be reduced. A separate aperture scale for usewith the diffuser panel (A-7]r is provided on the back of the flash.
                                                                                           cl t * ,$r*fi v2POWER SWITCH AND MONITOR LEUP t/. "
To turn the flash on and charge its capacitor, attach the flash to the camera,s hot shoe (D-1) and
move the power switch to the "ON', position (l-1). A special contact switch (A-1g) on the attaching
bracket of the flash overrides the main power switch, and turns the flash off whenever it is removed
from the camera's hot shoe. This prevents battery drain if the flash is removed and stored withoutturning off the power switch.

i With the flash in place and the power switch on, the red monitor lamp (A-14) will light to
indicate the flash has recycled. The following table gives recycle times for fresh batteries of various
types.
 Power source Recycle time
Fresh sealed carbon-zinc batteries 9 sec
Fresh al kal ine batteries 7 sec
 Ni-Cd batteries 4 sec
The recycle times given here were determined by Minolta's standard testing methods. Times
may vary according to type, brand, manufacturer's lot, age of batteries, and ambient temperature.
Recycle times will of course increase as batteries are discharged. Carbon-zinc and alkaline-
manganese batteries should be replaced with fresh cells when recycle time exceeds 30 seconds.
Nickel-cadmium batteries should be recharged when recycle time exceeds 10 seconds.

 NOTES
o Cold temperatures will cause a decrease in battery capacity, resulting in longer recycle times and
fewer number of flashes. lt is thus recommended that you carry fresh spares in a warm inside
coat pocket for replacement. Batteries will recover their lost capacity when returned to warm
   conditions.
View original page 13
Page 14 · Read text
www.butkus.us
o Firing the flash several times in rapid succession may cause the batteries to temporarily lose some
of their capacity, resulting in longer recycle times. Turning the flash off and giving it approx.
30 minutes to rest will allow the batteries to recover their capacity.

OPERATION
Automatic operation with the CLE camera
The Auto Electroflash CLE is designed to provide automatic flash exposure with only the
Minolta CLE camera. With all other cameras, only manual operation of the flash is possible.
   To obtain proper automatic flash exposures, proceed as follows;
1. Set both the flash and camera for the ASA rating of the film being used, and turn the camera,s
shutter-speed/function selector to the automatic "A" position (E, Gt.
2. Set the camera lens to the aperture you wish to use (any aperture from maximum to minimum can be used) (Hl.
3. Focus on your subject, and note the focused distance from the scaleon the lens (Jl.
View original page 14
Page 15 · Read text
4. Turn the flash on (l-1) and check to see if your subject is within the automatic operating range
of the lens aperture you have chosen. This is done by taking the focused distance from the lens
scale(Jl and finding the corresponding figure on the distance scale(A-12) on the back of the flash.
Then read straight down to the green flash-distance indicator bar that lies directly to the right
of the figure in the aperture scale that corresponds to your lens setting. There are two aperture
scales on the back of the flash (A-7,8). Always use the aperture scale directly below the LED
    flash-coverage indicator that is lit.
lf the focused distance of your subject falls anywhere on the green indicator, the subject is within
range (K-l). lf not, change your aperture setting or flash-to-subject distance so that your subject
will be within range. The left-hand end of the green indicator gives you the minimum focusing
distance, and the right-hand end gives the maximum.
5. lf your subject is within the automatic operating range, check the monitor lamp to confirm that
the flash capacitor is charged and ready to fire.
Now place your finger on the camera's touch switch/shutter release, and look through the
viewfinder. lf the "60" LED indicator is blinking, the flash willfire when the shutter is released
(L). lf a shutter speed higher than 1/60 sec. is indicated, the flash will not fire and the camera
will continue to operate in the normal, non-flash automatic-exposure mode.
f f the "60" LED indicator lights up but does not blink, the flash may or may not fire depending
on lighting conditions. Therefore, to ensure firing of the flash, stop the lens down until the "60"
LED indicator begins to blink. Make sure your subject is within the automatic operating range
   of the new lens setting.

Page 16 · Read text
www.butkus.us
NOTE
when using the self-timer to take flash pictures, confirm that the "60" LED is blinking beforeyou start the timer
6. Release the shutter to take the picture.

NOTES
o After the flash has fired, the camera will switch back to normal automatic operation until the flash
has recycled, the monitor lamp lights, and the viewfinder "60" LED begins to blink.
o The flash automatically sets the camera for X-sync. speed when the shutter is released.
r When not taking flash pictures, the unit should be turned off ll-2} or removed from the camera
lD'zl-. This returns the camera to fulr normal automatic operation.
o When recycle time exceeds 20 seconds, or if the flash is to be fired immediately after the monitor
lamp comes on, subjects at the maximum distance of the auto operating range tend to be under-
exposed. In this case, it is recommended to open up the lens in accordance with conditions.
o The automatic operating range of the flash will be reduced if any materials are placed over the
guard window to diffuse the light of the flash.

Automatic flash-exposure adjustment
The automatic-exposure adjustment control of the Minolta CLE camera can be used to increase
sameor decrease automatic flash exposure up to plus (+) or minus (-) two stops. This is done in the (M). However, anyway as normal automatic-exposure adjustment (see CLE camera's manual)
change in exposure adjustment causes a respective increase or decrease in the automatic operating
range of the flash. To determine the change in range, use the green indicator bars above or below the
one for the set lens aperture. For example, if your lens is set at f/5.6 you would use thef l4 indicator
bar for -1 stop of exposure adjustment, and the 112.8 bar for -2 stops of adjustment. For +1 stop
exposure adjustment, you would use the f/8 indicator bar, and the Il11 bar for +2 stops adjustment.
NOTE
When taking photos against a highly reflective background, such as a white wall or curtain, an
exposure increase of +1 12 to +1 stop is recommended. ConverselV, dn exposure decrease of -1 12 to
-1 stop is recommended for backgrounds with poor reflectance, such as black curtains or outdoor
shots at night.
Manual flash exposure with the CLE camera
To make manual flash exposures with the Auto Electroflash CLE and Minolta CLE camera,
proceed as follows;

Page 18 · Read text
www.butkus.us
 1. Set the flash for the ASA rating of the film being used.
 2. Turn the camera's shutter-speed/function selector to the desired manual shutter speed. Manual
speeds for flash sync. are "8" and from "1" to "60" (N). The flash will not fire if a shutter
speed faster than "60" is set.
3. lf the flash-to-subject distance is fixed, focus on the subject and find the distance using the scale
on the lens. Turn on the power switch and f ind the corresponding figure on the f lashes'distance
scale and read straight down until you reach the right-hand end of one of the green flash-distance
indicator bars (K-2l-. lf you do not come to the exact end of a bar, read down to the one whose
end comes closest. Now read directly to the left, and set your lens aperture to the corresponding
figure in the scale directly below the lit LED indicator.
lf the flash-to-subject distance did not fall on the end of the indicator bar, but to the left of it,
stop down the lens 112 stop. lf it falls just to the right of the bar's end, open up the lens 112
    stop.
lf you wish to set a specific lens aperture instead, find its corresponding figure on the flashes'
aperture scale and read across to the right to the end of the green indicator bar. Now read
straight up to the distance scale to find the correct flash-to-subject distance. Focus the camera
for this distance and move the camera or subject within range (K-3).
4. Release the shutter after the monitor lamp comes on to take the picture.

Use of the Auto Electroflash CLE with other cameras
The Auto Electroflash CLE can be used for manual flash exposure with any camera equipped
with a hot shoe.
lf it is used with a Minolta XD, XG, or 110 Zoom Mark ll cameraatanyelectronicsetting, the
flash will star:t the camera's flash-ready signal in the viewfinder blinking when the unit is charged
and ready to fire (O). lt will also set these cameras for proper X sync. when the shutter is released.
For all other cameras, be sure that the camera is not set for a shutter speed faster than the manu-
facturer's recommendation for flash sync.
                                                   Lu'Q,ett' ,b-' t bsr U,>
NOTES
o lf the flash is to be fired immediately after the monitor lamp comes on, or when recycle time
exceeds 20 sec., it is recommended to open the lens further a half to one stop more than indicated.
o In poor reflecting conditions, such as outdoor night shots, the lens should be opened an additional
half to one stop more than indicated.
o Before using the flash on cameras other than the Minolta CLE, check if the flash wil.l fire when the
  shutter is released.

CARE AND STORAGE
o When the flash has not been used for a long time, recycle time may increase. However, if you fire
the unit several times, it will return to normal. Firing the flash several times a month will keep it
in good condition even if it is unused for a long period.
. Never fire the flash directly into a person's eyes at a close distance.
o The Auto Electroflash CLE is designed for use at temperatures between 50o and the -1OoC. lf unit becomes hotter or colder than this, operation will be more or less unsatisfactory.
o Keep the flash away from water, and dry.
o Never attempt to disassemble the unit. Any repairs necessary should be done by an authorized
  Minolta service facility.
o Because of its energy'saving circuit, this flash consumes less current than conventional units.
However, it should be turned off or removed from the camera when not used for a long period.
o The flash may be wiped with a silicon-treated cloth to clean it. Do not allow alcohol or other
  chemicals to touch its surface.
o lf the flash is not to be used for two weeks or more, its batteries should be removed.
o The flash unit should never be placed or left in the glove compartment or other places in motor
vehicles or elsewhere in which it may be subject to temperatures higher than 60oC (14OoF).
Further, do not store it in humid places, near corrosive chemicals, or where it would be subjected
to dust or dirt. Store in a cool, well ventilated place.

WE ITWIN KE L.D I F FUSORSCHE IBE
