Nikon'scriteriafor specifications,and nonconformingcameras/accessoriescould damagethe

Installingthe battery
I Set the SB-30'soowerswitchto the OFF oosition.
2 Open the batterychamberlid as indicatedby the arrows.
3 Installthe batteryfollowingthe + and - marksas shown.Then close the batterychamberlid by
slidingit into placewhile pressingdown.
. Installone3V lithiumbattery(CR123Aor DL123A).Do notusetheothertypesof batteries.
r Whenreplacingthe battery,be sureto setthe powerswitchto the OFFposition.lf the batteryis replaced
whilethe powerswitchis setto the ON or STBY(standby)position,the Speedlightmayfireaccidentallyor
the powermay notturnon correctlyIn thiscase,setthe SB-30'spowerswitchto the OFFpositiononce,

Battery performance
. Whenusinga freshbattery,the numberof flasheswhenthe SB-30firesat M1/1outputis approx.250 times.
. Witha freshbattery,the recyclingtime afterthe SB-30firesat M 1/1outputis approx.4 seconds.
. Replacethe battery,if the ready-lighttakesmorethan 30 secondsto lightup when the unitfirstturned

Conservingbatterypowerusing the Standbyfunction
o lf the SB-30'spower switch is set to the STBYposition,the Standbyfunctionis activated
only when the Mode selectordial is set to eitherTTL auto, Non-TTLauto,or Manual
flashmode.
. lf the SB-30and the camera are not used for approx.40 seconds,the Standbyfunction
activatesand automaticallvturns the SB-30off to conservebattervDower.This is called
the standbystate.
r The Standbyfunctiondoes not work if the Mode selectordial is set to the Wirelessslave
flash mode. Take care that the power remainson and is consuming.
To turn the SB-30on again after it enters in the standby state,you can:
o Pressthe Standbyresumebutton/Slaveflashfiring cancel button.
. Lightlypress the shutterreleasebuttonon a camerathat is compatiblewith the TTL auto
flash mode,

Two auto flash modes are availablewith the SB-30:TTL auto flash and Non-TTLauto flash
TTL auto flash mode
Thismode is possiblewith SLRscarnerascompatiblewithTTL autoflash At

Variableapertures after zooming in or out
. With zoom lenses having a variable aperture, take note of the following before setting the

At wideangle zoom settings, read the aperture value at the green index (or line).

Manual flash mode
The SB-30'sflashoutputlevelcan be set manuallyat M1i1, M1/8,or M1132.Inthe Manualmooe,
you must determinethe correctexposureby calculationusing a combinationof the guide numoer,
shootingdistance,and lens aperture.
o lf the camera'sexposuremodeis set to otherthanAperture-PriorityAuto(A) or Manual(M),the shutter may

Wireless slave flash shooting
In this section,the SB-30is used as a slaveflash unit that startsand stops firing in sync with the master
Speedlightmountedon the cameraor the camera'sbuilt-inSpeedlight.With the SB-30,the following
types of wirelessslaveflash shootingcan be performed.
o The Standbyfunctiondoes not work if the Mode selectordial is set to the Wirelessslaveflash mode.
Take care that the power remainson and is consuming.
Shooting a distant subiect using cameras such as the COOLPIXthat have a built-in Speedlight (p.22)
By placing the camera and the SB-30 side-by-side to fire the SB-30 in sync with the built-in S-peedlighi - you can illuminate a distant subject, creating possible a picture not when using the built-in flash by
itself.
Using the sB-30 as a slave flash unit placed away from the camera (p.24)
In multipleflash,when the SB-30is used awayfrom the camera,you can createmore natural-looking
pictureswith sufficientilluminationthroughoutthe picture.
Softening shadows casl on the wall by the master flash unit or lightening the background (p. 26)
By usingthe SB-30at full (M1/1)output,you can eliminateunattractiveshadowsor light6nthe
backgroundto createmore natural-lookingpictures.
Muftiple flash operation using the infrared remote commander (p.27)

Exposure compensation
Adjustingthe SB-30'sflashoutputis possibleby usingthe Exposurecompensationswitchwhen the
Mode selectordial is set to Non-TTLauto, Ml132,or M1/8.
Set the Exposurecompensationswitchto +1/2 positionto make the main subjectbrighter,or to -112lo
makethe subjectdarker.
WithCOOLPIXcameras,you can adjustthe flashoutputby checkingthe brightnessof the imageson
the monitor,then reshoot.
Exposure compensation switch
+112= Increasesthe flashoutputby +112EVto make the subjectbrighter
0: No compensation.Set the switchto zero (0) when no exposure
+1120 -112 compensationis desired.
-112= Decreasesthe flash output by -112EV to make the subject darker
o Making exposure compensation using the switch is not possible, if the Mode selector dial is set to the TTL
auto flash, M1/1, or Wirelessslave mode.
