PREFACE.



THE SINGERuse in theMANUFACTURINGhome three machines,CO. eachmakewithfora
radically different mechanism. These are the oscillating
mechanism, the vibratory mechanism and the single
thread chain stitch mechanism. The Singer Manufac-
turing Co., with its factories and offices reaching out
 and. covering every quarter of the globe, is better able
than any other company in the world to understand
just what is required in a sewing machine for family
work, and it spares neither time nor money in bring-
 ing this class of sewing machine to the very highest
 state of perfection, not only in the sewing machine
itself, but in the attachments pertaining to it, the cab-
 inet work and the stand. This Company especially
 understands the necessity there exists in the family
 sewing machine for a firm stand, an easy movement
 to the treadle and a minimum of noise. We feel assured
 that we to-day supply the lightest running, most noise-
 less and speedy machine in the market, and great care
 is taken that the machine shall be so constructed that
 not only is this the case while the machine is new, but
  it remains so during the entire life of the machine.

Every Singer Sewing Machine is sold direct to
the purchaser by our own salaried agents, and every
leased machine is owned by The Singer Manufacturing
Co. until the purchaser makes the final payment, when
he receives a bill of sale direct from The Singer Manu-
facturing Co. and not from a second party. The
advantage in this to the purchaser is that a Singer
 Agent is always at hand to look after the machine,
keep it in order, give instructions and make any
necessary repairs; not only is this the case in the
 United States, but in every city and town of any
 importance in the entire world. Our family machines,
 besides doing every conceivable kind of sewing
required in the family, can be used to do all kinds
 of fancy work and art needle work. Our exhibit of
 Fine Art Needle Work in the Columbian Exposition
 demonstrates this beyond dispute.

        SINGER OSCILLATING SHUTTLE MECHANISM.
   Showing the mechanism which is used with but little variation in all
Singer machines of the oscillating type.
   We claim that it is more nearly perfect in principle than any of its
predecessors. There is but one simple conversion of motion— rotating
to oscillating—no differential motion or variable speed, and the results
obtained in combined ease, speed, capacity and durability are unequaled:

the oscillating shuttle machine is correct, both in principle and in
mechanical detail,

          SINGER VIBRATORY SHUTTLE NO. 2.
   Our Vibratory Shuttle Machine, the skeleton of which is shown
above, is the simplest, lightest running shuttle machine in the market.
It has a positive take up automatic bobbin winder, thread releaser, and
will do any work, light or heavy, required in the home.
