MANUFACTURING MACHINES
When ordering machines attention must be given to the items
and instructions which follow:
FIRST. The CLass NUmBers designate the type or form of machine.
SECOND. The VarIeTY NuMBeRs designate the special features of each
machine.
THIRD. The HYPHEN or Letter separating Class and Variety numbers is
essential and must not be omitted.
FOURTH. The NUMBeRs AND PrIceS include Heads with regular
accessories only, fitted as described, wItHOUt staNDs or tables except when
ordered. When the description includes driving attachment, knee lifter, or
other mechanism requiring connections below the table, the numbers and prices
cover all parts necessary for such connection.
FIFTH. DRIP Pans are included with machine heads and NOT with
stands, nor with power tables.
SIXTH. LAP SEAM FELLERS, MULTIPLE CORDERS, SPECIAL HEMMeRS,
BINDERS, FOLDERS and other attachments, except when covered by the descrip-
tion, must be ordered separately; samples of material to be used should be sent
with such orders as well as specimens of finished work and information whether
the body or mass of the goods is to pass at the right or left of the needle, so that
practical tests can be made at the factory before shipment of the machine or
attachment.
SEVENTH. EAcH SamPLE should be plainly marked with the name of
the Agency and the number of the order to which it pertains.
EIGHTH. WHEN AN ATTACHMENT IS OrDEReD separately, the cLAss and
VARIETY numbers of the machine for which it is intended must be given; also
the gauge or distance between needles, if the machine has more than one needle.
NINTH. WHEN ORDERING MACHINES BY TELEGRAPHIC CIPHER be careful
to write EACH LETTER of the Cipher vERY plainly.
TENTH. With the exceptions mentioned below, HINGEs FOR MACHINE
HEADS for all Square Bed Machines, whether Family or Manufacturing, are
considered as part of the Cabinet Work, or as part of the Power Table or
Bench Stand and are shipped with such wood work and not with the head.
The only exceptions to this rule are hinges Nos. 12363 and 37750, of which
connection No. 12361 will be shipped with the heads of Machines of Classes 31,
44, 52, 53, 55, 95 and 96, and connection No. 37749 with those of Class 88,
Plate No. 12362 will be shipped with the wood work for all of the above
mentioned machines.
In eases where Manufacturing Machines are ordered separately, to be placed
on Benches already erected but not yet cut out, hinges will be shipped from
factory with the heads, but orders for heads in such cases MUST STATE that
hinges are required.View original page 7Page 8 · Read text
MANUFACTURING MACHINES
DESCRIPTIVE PAMPHLETS
The descriptive pamphlets, which more fully describe the machines
mentioned in this Catalogue, should be liberally used among manufacturers
and others who use or require Sewing Machines.
SPEED
THE MAXIMUM SpeeDs recommended in this Catalogue at which the
machines may be driven, are only approximate; the most economical speed for
any machine must be decided by good judgment, after considering all the
conditions under which it is to be used.
When a machine is employed in stitching thin fabrics, with frequent stops
to arrange the work, it may be driven at a much higher speed than one of the
same class employed upon similar goods, but driven continuously, as in hemming
or tucking very long pieces.
The quality, and weight or thickness of the material to be stitched must
also be taken into consideration.
For these reasons it is impossible to recommend a speed for any machine
which will be of maximum utility under all circumstances.
Although all Singer Sewing Machines are thoroughly "run in" before ship-
ment, they are very closely fitted and should therefore at starting be driven at a
comparatively low speed; after the parts have become glazed by their action
upon each other, the speed may be increased to the maximum recommended
THE NUMBER PLATE
The specific designation of each Singer Sewing Machine consists of two
numbers, separated by a hyphen or letter and stamped upon a number plate
which is attached to the machine, usually upon the arm.
95-1
The number before the hyphen or letter designates the Class to which the
machine belongs, and the number after, the Variety of the machine in its Class.
When supplies for a machine are to be ordered and there is any uncertainty
as to the correct numbers of needles or parts, the Class and Variety numbers of
the machine, as shown on the number plate, should be given to ensure a correct
understanding of the order.
THE ALTERNATING PRESSERS
This mechanism consists of a vibrating and a lifting presser working in
combination, so arranged that they press down alternately upon the work, each
at its moment of pressure forming a fulerum upon which the other is raised. In
operation the alternating pressers appear to walk over the fabric, passing with
equal facility over a smooth, even surface or work having abrupt inequalities in
thickness; they have no tendeney to retard the upper piece of the work, which
therefore comes out even with the lower piece when the seam is finished.View original page 8Page 9 · Read text
MANUFACTURING MACHINES
INDEPENDENT UPPER AND UNDER FEEDS
In machines having this mechanism the work is clamped between the
feeding foot and the under feed surface while it is moving forward.
The presser is connected with a positive feeding mechanism, which an be
adjusted independently of the lower feed, so as to cause the upper piece of fabric
to move forward faster or slower as desired in relation to the movement of the
lower piece.
THE VIBRATING PRESSER
The Presser Foot in this mechanism is attached to a supplementary foot bar,
hinged at its upper end to a section of the regular presser bar. In operation it
moves forward with the material under the impulse of the feed mechanism and is
then automatically lifted and forced back by a spring to its first position near the
needle; it is then let down upon the work by the continued automatic action of
the mechanism. The Vibrating Presser is useful when stitching material having
an adhesive surface or upon thick soft goods, as it allows them to move forward
without friction under the foot.
S. D. A.
The S. D. A. or Singer Driving Attachment is a device, operated by pressure
upon a treadle by which the constantly moving belt pulley on the machine is
brought into contact with a frictional surface on the balance wheel, and its
motion thereby transmitted to the machine. When the pressure is removed a
brake is automatically applied and the machine instantly stopped; by the use of
S. D. A. the speed of the machine up to its full capacity is under the control of
the operator.
THE UNDERDRIVER
The Underdriver is a device to be fastened to the under surface of the
power table for the purpose of transmitting the motion of the power table
shaft to the machine; it is provided with a loose cone pulley which is belted to
the driving pulley on the table shaft, a tight pulley which is belted to the
pulley of the balance wheel and a treadle and pitman by which the moving
loose pulley is caused to impart its motion to the tight pulley and thence
to the machine.
THE BELT SHIFTER
This device is rarely used for Sewing Machines except on those for con-
tinuous heavy work, and with which a flat belt is used; it consists of two guides
with a space slightly wider than the width of the belt, mounted upon a slide and
having a handle by which the slide can be moved and the belt guided from the
loose to the tight pulley on the machine and vice versa, thus starting or stopping
the machineView original page 9Page 15 · Read text

MACHINES OF CLASS 5
For stitching canvas or rubber beits up to 34 inches in width and # inch in thickness.
MACHINE No. 5-7
These heavy machines have bed plates 67⅕ inches long and the available
clear space at the right of the needle is 17 inches. The work is moved forward
between two corrugated feed rolls, one of which is adjustable for the thickness
of the work. As regularly fitted the feed rolls are 20 inches long, but if so
ordered the machines will be fitted with 32 inch feed rolls. The regular length
the stitch is % inch, but this can be changed to ⅒ inch at any time,
if desired, and the machine can be fitted for longer stitches if so ordered.
While stitching, the belt passes forward between two edge guides, that are
set for the width of the belt and fastened to a rod, which can be moved the
required distance for each successive line of stitching; as described below some
machines have screw guides one complete turn of which moves the work ¼ inch,
and the others have guides fastened to sliding rods, and secured in position by
spring catches. The distance between rows of stitching should be stated upon
the order.
All machines of Class 5 have belt shifters and heavy iron legs. They are
regularly furnished with flat presser foot, but a roller presser will be substituted
if specitied on the order. See Form 9002.
These machines will be fitted with No. 14 Needles unless otherwise ordered.

MACHINES OF CLASS 6
Bed plate 25% Inches long. Clear space at right of needle 14 inches.
SINGER
MAcHINE No. 6-8
For thick, heavy work in cloth, leather or paper. These machines are not
suitable for foot power, but the different varieties are fitted for underdriver or
with S. D. A. or belt shifter, as specified in the description of each machine.
The under thread is carried in an oscillating shuttle having long beak,
which holds the loop of upper thread stationary while the eye of the needle
rises through the goods; the upper thread, therefore, retains its full strength and
both threads are firmly locked together in the center of the thickness of the
goods by the combined pull of the shuttle and the take-up, after the needle has
risen. Machines Nos. 6-1 to 6-4 are regularly furnished with a flat presser;
roller presser will be furnished if specified on order. See Form 9003.
